The burnout and dysregulation of modern life

Have you seen the recent challenge trend where people sit and do nothing for a whole hour? When was the last time you sat down to do nothing? No phone, no podcast, no background noise. Just you and the quiet. It feels almost impossible and most of us struggle to get through 30 seconds before reaching for something.
We've started calling it laziness. Low motivation. A lack of discipline. We’re always tired but can't relax. But what if it's actually overstimulation and we’re drowning in the symptoms of digital burnout? What if the issue isn't that we're not doing enough, but that we never, ever stop?
The always-on brain: what digital overstimulation actually does to you
Our nervous systems were built for rhythm. The natural ebb and flow. Stimulation followed by rest. Effort followed by recovery. For most of human history, we had exactly that: active periods followed by genuine downtime, and the brain had space to process, consolidate and reset.
But modern life has rapidly dismantled that rhythm. We wake up to notifications. We scroll at breakfast. We work through screens, commute through podcasts and unwind by consuming more content. Even when we rest, we scroll. When we relax, we consume. The gaps where the mind used to breathe have been filled in, and the brain has become stuck in a permanent state of low level alert.
What's actually happening inside your head
This isn't just a feeling. Every notification, every scroll, every quick hit of content triggers a small release of dopamine, the brain's reward and motivation chemical. Platforms like social media are deliberately designed to keep users' attention and encourage constant scrolling, reinforcing a dopamine driven feedback loop that makes us want more.
The problem is that the brain adapts. Over time, chronic overstimulation causes the brain to downregulate its own dopamine production to bring itself back to baseline, and that dopamine deficit can start to feel like low motivation, low energy, or even depression. We keep scrolling not to feel good but just to feel normal.
Meanwhile, frequent exposure to rapid, high intensity stimuli trains the brain to expect information in short bursts, making any task that requires more than a minute of sustained focus feel like a monumental hurdle. That book you can't seem to finish, the conversation you keep drifting out of, the work you keep putting off. It's not a character flaw but a conditioned brain struggling to operate at a pace it was never designed for.
Chronic stress and nervous system dysregulation
Here's where it gets a little more serious. Overstimulation doesn't just affect focus but keeps your body in a low level state of stress, one you might not even notice because it's become your baseline. When stressors are always present, the fight or flight response stays turned on. Prolonged activation means cortisol and stress hormones are chronically elevated, disrupting almost all of the body's processes: from digestion and sleep to memory and heart health.
You might not feel stressed, exactly, but your biology does. Chronic stress changes how the brain allocates attention, stores memories, and regulates emotion. It ends up spending more time in a protective mode, anticipating problems, scanning for conflict, and conserving energy. Over time, this shows up as brain fog, a shorter fuse, reduced creativity, and the strange exhaustion of doing very little and still feeling completely drained.

We've confused restlessness for rest
Part of the problem is cultural. We live in a world that celebrates being busy. Productivity is a personality trait. And when we do stop we feel guilty, so we fill the gaps with passive consumption instead of actual recovery.
But passive consumption isn't rest. Watching three hours of TV while simultaneously scrolling your phone isn't switching off: it's switching channels. Our nervous systems were designed for cycles of stimulation and recovery, but digital life doesn't allow for that rhythm. We've eliminated the gaps where meaning and restoration can grow.
True rest is the kind where nothing is demanded of you. Where boredom is allowed to exist and where your mind wanders without a destination. We're losing our capacity for boredom, which was once the seedbed of creativity and insight.
Burnout recovery starts with rest: the comeback of doing less
The good news? The brain is remarkably adaptable. The same neuroplasticity that got us into this pattern can help us find our way out of it.
It doesn't require a digital detox retreat or a complete lifestyle overhaul. It starts with smaller things, deliberate pauses, time outside without a destination, moments of sensory simplicity like heat, water, stillness, nature, where the nervous system is given permission to exhale. Even something as simple as a deliberate dopamine detox of a few hours without screens can begin to shift the pattern.
Research increasingly points to the value of practices that create a genuine break from stimulation, not as luxury but as a biological need. Our bodies weren't built for this pace, and the weariness so many of us feel isn't weakness. It's a signal.
We're not lazy.
We're not unmotivated.
We're overstimulated. And somewhere inside, we're asking for rest.
The bigger picture
This isn't about demonising technology or retreating from modern life. It's about recognising that rest is not a reward you earn at the end of a productive week. It's a requirement, wired into your nervous system, that no amount of hustle culture can override.
The most radical thing you can do in a restless society isn't to do more, but is to deliberately practise the art of doing less.
